“Getting to know you, getting to feel free and easy…haven't you noticed suddenly I'm bright and breezy, because of all the beautiful and new things I'm learning about you, day by day.” – Rodgers and Hammerstein, The King and I

Hello hello! Today, I thought I’d do a little “Get to Know Me” post, so you could learn a bit more about the lady behind this blog. So, in the spirit of getting to know each other better, here are 10 facts about me:

1. My name is Mwahaki King (pronounced Muah-Kee)

2. I lived in London, England until I was about 10 years old. Then, I moved with my mother to her native, Jamaica and stayed there until university.

I went to university on the West Coast of the United States and afterwards relocated to Boston, Massachusetts because of a job offer. I’ve been in Beantown ever since, but the West Coast will always have a special place in my heart. (I mean, In-N-Out Burgers are what dreams are made of)
3. I love strawberry anything! Juice, milkshakes, margaritas, actual strawberries; if it’s strawberry I WILL eat or drink it.

4. I’m a Leo…but not nearly as bossy as the stereotypes suggest ;)

5. I speak English, French and Spanish. My mum started me on French and Spanish lessons veryyyy early, I was about 3 or 4 years old. I also speak Jamaican Creole, given my family, friends and having lived in Jamaica for so long.

6. In university, I began studying Chinese and Arabic. I ended up spending the first half of 2011 in Jordan during the Arab Spring doing research and learning more Arabic. I really enjoyed studying both languages but it’s been a long time since I’ve had any reason to speak either of them and I’ve gotten quite rusty :(

However, I’m going to get back into them this year #resolutions.

Honestly, I just love languages and being able to communicate with people from varied backgrounds and find common ground.

7. I love swimming! I don’t know if that’s a product of growing up on islands or that my mum put me in lessons before I can even remember – probably a little bit of both. Swimming is one of my absolute favourite ways to relax. I don’t remember a time when I couldn’t swim, so there’s something calming and familiar about plunging into the deep end of a pool and doing a few laps to clear my head.

8. Speaking of hobbies and calming activities, I love love love reading and getting lost in a fictional world. So, here are some of my favourite works of literature:

·         Favourite Children’s Book(s): The Famous Five Series – Enid Blyton (Honourable mentions to Beatrix Potter, Roald Dahl and Dick King Smith)
·         Favourite Contemporary Novel(s): Americanah – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Une Si Longue Lettre – Mariama Ba, and pretty much anything that Mitch Albom writes
·         Favourite Classic: The Count of Monte Cristo – Alexander Dumas
·         Favourite Shakespeare: Macbeth

Like many in my generation of 20-somethings, I’m also a huge Harry Potter fan. The evidence of which can be seen in my 2016 Halloween costume:

9. Music – I love most types of music and can usually find something to love about any genre. I do however, have soft spots for Reggae, Dancehall, Grime, Calypso, Soca and anything Elton John or Rod Stewart have to say. Oh and The Eagles, God I love The Eagles!

10. Finally, having grown up in the UK and Jamaica, I believe most of my problems can always be solved with a strong cup of tea :)
